Okay, so the phrase is really "busy as a bee" but this way we get the month of June in the title. We've been busy little Junebugs because so many blogs that I follow have all these great ideas for summer activities. And this is the first year the kids-Bella in particular-can really enjoy said activities. And because I have been convicted through many, many sources about being on Facebook while the kids wander the house playing. So, I grabbed all the greatest ideas from other blogs (why reinvent the wheel?) and made a list of 35 or so activities, on little slips of paper, cut up and put into our "Summer Fun" jar. Each day Bella gets to pick out something and then we do it. We've also decided to do more fun out-of-our-ordinary activities as a family, so this catalogs the best of it all so far!
Our latest adventure was to see an Indians game. They're the minor league team in town and you can get some pretty cheap seats. We had a beautiful 70-something degree overcast day to enjoy the game. The kids had more fun going up and down the stairs and eating all the good ballpark food than watching the game, but we had a great day as a family none the less. I mean, look at our seats!
One of the "didn't go as planned" activities was building with marshmallows and toothpicks. They were really fresh marshmallows, and Bella's not quite to the building stage. Ryan thought the activity was delicious!
Another day Bella made her first sun print. I bought some special paper at Hobby Lobby (love them!), I let her pick random flowers (and grass, and branches) and a few minutes later she had a masterpiece. I haven't gotten a picture of the finished result (which was so-so) but I'm ready to try some new ones soon.
Painting! With cars! I showed Bella how to paint the wheels on her car, then make tracks all over some paper. It gave her a chance to create, and me a chance to work on the computer across from her. By the time I looked up she had given up making tracks in favor of painting all her cars with the paint. Time for a car wash!
And last week the kids and I went to The Children's Museum to see their latest exhibit about treasure finds: the tombs of Egypt, Captain Kidd's ship, and the Terra Cotta Warriors in China. I love the museum-they let kids get involved-so Bella put on a fake oxygen tank and goggles and went to explore. Waaaay better than the stuffed-animals-in-glass-cases experience that I had when I was her age!
Riding bikes! We are getting our fair share of Vitamin D from being out in the sun (although this shot is a bit dark...). Bella cruises on hers (she's building up her muscles so we can go to McDonald's for ice cream) and Ryan rides on his. And I get exercise too-it's a win for all three of us.
I love this shot. I mean, look at those faces. Classic Ryan and Bella. She's in "a mood" and Ryan is trying to say "Chee" for the shot. The library has a program at the Monon Center which is story time and a craft on a particular topic. Today's topic was boxes, so the kids got to origami a pre-cut sheet of paper into a handy box. I thought it was cool. The kids tossed theirs in the backseat and there they remain.
We finally made it to a playdate at the park. This is the ginormous slide that, when Bella was two, she slid right down. Last year it completely freaked her out, but she's back with a vengeance this year!
The other side of the park is a spray park and Ryan was keeping himself busy trying to drink from every sprayer out there!
I love that Ryan is such a servant-hearted little guy. Here he is pushing Bella on the "swing" and then I let him hop on while I pushed them both.
Father's Day! The kids and I didn't do anything "special" for Joshua (since we leave on Sunday mornings at 8:00 and he's still sleeping) but we did go out to lunch afterwards, and here's a shot of him with his two favorite little ones.
A few months ago Ryan would say, "Potty!" and we'd rush off and he'd go. Well, he's fallen off the wagon. So here we are trying it again. I love that he picked up a copy of Car and Driver to while the time away!
The kids' new favorite activity is getting in the front seat and pretending they're driving. It's a sobering idea-all too soon it will be reality!
Our local PBS station hosts a day in the park for the kids. We walked around seeing characters from the TV shows the kids watch, picking up goodies, and generally having fun! Here Bella hugs "SuperWhy" her favorite character from the show. Ryan was all gung-ho to see SuperWhy too until it was actually time to take a picture, and then he wanted no part of it!
Bella spelling her name at one of the booths. She can write it now too (although she sometimes forgets the vowels).
Stay tuned for next month's exciting episode!
